Heir to the Roman empire, the so-called “Byzantine” empire survived the destruction of Rome in 476, for nearly 1000 years. This (perforce) short presentation of a complex subject highlights the main periods of the empire and its evolution until the capture of Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1453.
