This short lecture, dictated by time constraints on a very rich itinerary, is meant to complement the lecture Greece, a country, a history, a culture
The lecture on Greece concentrated on the period between the Dark Ages and Independence. Volos, thanks to its excellent museum and its presence in mythology, allows visitors to discover a legendary past (the Argonauts, the wedding of Thetis and Peleus), impressive artefacts from the Neolithic period and the Mycenean and Hellenistic eras. Closer to us, and rather tragic, the creation of the New Ionia district is a testimony to the Great Catastrophe and the exchange of population that followed the Treaty of Lausanne.
