The only Hindu island in a country whose majority is Muslim, Bali has its own traditions, which many tourists are keen to discover. But, in spite of appearances, one should not imagine it is a paradise: some Balinese feel that these beliefs and rituals are stifling, and they would like to move forward. They are exposed to Western values through tourism but there is no guarantee that adopting them would benefit Bali.
