The French presence in Vietnam

The colonial buildings still found in large Vietnamese towns are an enduring legacy of that period. It is, however, quite difficult nowadays to assess the achievements of that period as colonisation has such bad press. One cannot deny that the motivation of the colonisers was not purely altruistic, but it would be equally false to think that they did not bring anything positive to the country. There are painful memories but there was also progress.
