What an incredible and tragic destiny! What can we believe of the legend surrounding this young girl? A young peasant, who would have heard voices from Heaven telling her that she had to rid France of the English presence? who would have travelled halfway across the country to convince the heir to the throne that she was entrusted with a mission? who would have changed the course of History? It does not sound very likely, and yet, she did lead armies against the English and was victorious. Her short life ended when she was burnt at the stake at the age of 19, having been caught in the political intrigues of the 100 years’ war? There are still many mysteries about her, including her origins, but she has remained one of the best-known French heroines for many centuries.
