The Romans had called the Mediterranean “Mare Nostrum / Our Sea”. We have all seen these historical maps where the whole area of the Mediterranean is in only one colour. And yet, the Romans were not pioneers: Phoenicians, Greeks, Etruscans, and Macedonians have all played an important role before they did. One only needs to look at Roman culture as a whole to see how all these groups have contributed to its formation.
