The Shetlands are the northernmost islands of the United Kingdom and, quite often, on maps are placed apart from the rest of the country in a separate box to save on space! One could argue that they would fit in just as well, if not better, within a map of Scandinavia. History has sometimes concurred with this view since the islands were under Viking, later Scandinavian, domination, from the 9thcentury to 1472.
